Yes, Android Studio Otter 2.x and 3.x are currently broken.

The main bug tracker can be found here:

https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/462217258

To temporarily solve this problem, currently there are two safe working options:

a.) If you want to stay on Android Studio Otter 2/3 (currently not recommended) before each start, delete the entire .idea folder in your project before the next Android Studio Start. That path is located directly inside your project. If you are within the Poject view within AS(Android Studio), just right-click on your project and select "open in" -> "explorer" and select your project. Now close AS and delete the entire .idea folder. This will wipe all run configurations, editor states, breakpoints and open classes history and will always work once before next restart of AS. As said, you will need to do it every time before you restart AS until the problem is fixed.

b.) Recommended solution: Downgrade to AS 2025.1.x or older. To do so, go to https://developer.android.com/studio/archive and select Android Studio Narwhal 4 Feature Drop | 2025.1.4 October 9, 2025

c.) (not tested): You can try to switch to the Canary build. These versions will get the quickest updates (but may not be stable every time). You can find it under: https://developer.android.com/studio/preview?hl=de

Important: If you choose b.) or c.) and you still get issues, close AS and try to delete the .idea folder. If it is once broken, it might be needed to wipe it once, even on a working Version of AS.

The reason is minifyEnable uses some kind of Serialization, and it is not supported.

Possible solutions:

  1. Set the isMinifyEnabled = false for all build, restart the IDE.

  2. Delete the Misc.xml every time before launch the AS.

  3. Wait for the Android Studio Otter 3 Feature Drop | 2025.2.3 Canary 3
