A simple expression of pleasure that you have been found qualified, and thanks to the officer for letting you know, seems like the polite and sensible thing to do. If you don't know what the next step is or how long it is likely to take, you could also ask that.

I have mentioned many times here how I get irritated with folks who "follow up" on their applications multiple times and pester me for decisions and progress updates. But when someone writes to you, it's only polite and useful to reply - that way they know you received and read it, and they know you didn't take another position in the meantime. So write something short and pleasant that doesn't pressure the person or make them regret giving you the information. If you don't have a question this could literally be one sentence.

Not only is it polite to acknowledge receipt of their email, thanking them won't go amiss.

  • Another reason to reply back is that, then they know that they have your correct email address.
  • It also lets them know that you are still interested.
  • And it gives you a chance to ask what the next step is, how long it might take, or any other questions such as, where you might find some more information about the department, institute, city or country.
