ASA's Sailing Challenge
ASA’s Sailing Challenge (for iPhone/iPad) includes six fun, easy-to-use modules that unlock the mysteries of sailing. Learn Points of Sail, Apparent Wind, Sail Trim, Tacking and Jibing, Rules of the Road, and Docking. Then, put it all together when you sail around a course against the clock in the Sailing module.
Sailing Challenge combines the most innovative thinking in the digital education field with ASA’s experience in teaching sailing to create a game that lets players climb aboard, take control of the tiller in one hand and the mainsheet in the other, and sail off on a virtual sea of fun. When the ASA says the fun starts here, we really mean it!

ASA has done a good job putting sailing in to an app. Which is how so many people explore their world these days. As I teach people to sail, I’m interested to see if this is helpful for my students. Would love to see them expand the app to include racing and more advanced techniques! The apparent wind lesson could be improved.

This app makes me whole. I’ve never been more satisfied. But dolphin functionality is limited. I also wish there was an option for a 70 ft sailboat and stormy weather. A giant evil whale could be a good addition.

Overall the app can be very helpful to learn points of sail and to start to recognize the ripple of a mainsail and when to trim. The open water maps are sadly quite limited. The British Virgian Islands Tour approaches what my expectations were going in. Even after buying the expansions, I have felt like there is something missing.
Great game and learning tool! Just please ease up the sensitivity on the second Trimming task (100% under 2 minutes). Also, any additional features or maps would be greatly appreciated, as I have seen no visible change in the app for as long as I have owned it. 🙂

The game is sadly far too limited, especially with an up front cost. Open sailing is particularly disappointing and limited. The sail trim practice is overly sensitive, requiring exact position of the slider without corresponding visual feedback other than speed. There’s not much to learn here because you can’t really tell the sail trim position, especially the differences between similar points of sail.
More functionality and better feedback within some of the modules is needed.

The physics of sailing are well represented in this app. Basic concepts are presented simply. Practice is realistically modeled. Highly recommended! Could have more practice scenarios.

Great for reviewing before you go out on the water especially for thinking of scenarios. Always best to be on the water but this is great review.

I’m not an experienced sailor, but while this was kind of useful for learning points of sail, a little bit of terminology, and very basic sailing concepts after a few hours at best you will have exhausted it. For 3.99 and in-app purchases to get variable winds or different boats it’s not worth it in my opinion. Save your money to buy a much more realistic sim like eSail if you are really interested in learning solid foundation stuff before you get out on the water or take courses to get a rating enabling you to charter boats.

About as educational as a phone-based tutorial can get. Maybe some improvements could be made with the interface to make it a little more realistic. Still, not a bad app for the price.

Really nice app. Just one comment: the apparent wind direction should change as a boat moves from slow to fast and additional trimming is needed. The app doesn’t seem to simulate that.

Some early challenges don't work. Supposed to click on various parts of the screen to answer questions but the app isn't responding. Must be a bug. Please fix!

I’ve had this app a while and over time they keep putting more and more restrictions on it to where it is pointless to have without having to not only purchase the app but purchase all the in-app purchases. Basically you are limited to one boat and 1mph sailing speed until you spend more money…after just purchasing the app. Why not just charge more for the app and include it all. Plan on spending more than the app to make it useful.

This was recommended to me a few months ago, and I finally got it. Why did I wait so long?!?! This is a wonderful teaching tool and great way to learn all of the complicated aspects of sailing. I already feel better equipped!

Way too basic to be entertaining. I would not consider this a tool to aid in learning to sail. Really annoying after paying fee to play there’s another fee to see different sea states. Why pay more if the current value can’t be seen.

Buggy garbage, should be free but it’s not and they nickel and dime you, just like every other ASA product. No refunds, even for a lousy app. You should be ashamed of yourselves and take up power boating!
