Product Positioning & Context

WorkOutDoors is the most advanced and most configurable workout app for the Apple Watch. It's perfect for running, cycling, hiking and any other indoor or outdoor activity.

Note: WorkOutDoors requires an Apple Watch Series 3 or later. It is not necessary to have your iPhone with you during a workout.

The app uses Apple’s workout system, so all workouts are saved to the Health system. However it also provides many extra features over Apple's app, such as:

- a super-smooth vector map that can be shown during a workout;
- multiple configurable screens with metrics and graphs from a pool of 800+ data fields;
- route files can be imported and used for navigation (including turn by turn directions);
- dozens of configurable alerts (e.g. every mile; high heart rate; low pace; off-route etc);
- interval schedules can be created using the larger screen of the phone app;
- climbs and descents are supported with notifications and on-screen data and graphs;
- waypoints can be created, navigated to, and exported;
- use shortcuts to associate operations with gestures (e.g. double tap to hear configurable metrics);
- compare pace against a target or a previous workout (using metrics and a dot on the map);
- show zones for pace and power as well as heart rate (with optional coloured backgrounds);
- auto-pause is available for all outdoor activities;
- shows GPS and heart rate before starting a workout, so that you can wait for good signals;
- configure distance and pace for running / walking to come from Apple’s pedometer or from GPS;
- workouts can be exported in FIT / TCX / GPX files, or automatically sent to Strava;
- workouts created by the app can be analysed in great depth in the iPhone app.

The app also has many more features. The map is a particular highlight. It uses OpenStreetMap, which provides worldwide coverage and includes the trails necessary for outdoor workouts. It also has several features that help you navigate during a workout:

- maps can be smoothly panned and zoomed, and can rotate according to the compass;
- a breadcrumb trail of your whole route is displayed on the map during the workout;
- topographic data can be shown, with configurable contour colours and hill shading;
- map-only mode is provided for when you don't want to start a workout and just need a map;
- a circular scale is shown when you zoom, making it easy to see the distance to features;
- maps can be stored on the watch for use when offline (they are downloaded as required if online);
- a red compass points north and a green compass points to the start;
- choose a waypoint to see a compass and distance to it in the corner of the map;
- you can also navigate to waypoints on the map, such as hospitals, sights, cafes etc.

If you load a route from a GPX / TCX / FIT file then navigation is even easier:

- your position is shown on an elevation profile of the route;
- the remaining distance, time and ascent can also be displayed;
- you can get alerted when you go off-route;
- when off-route then a compass is shown which points to the nearest part of the route;
- if the route contains turn by turn directions then these can be used like a sat nav;
- if there are no directions then the app can use “bend detection” to generate them;
- the next direction is shown as an icon and distance in the corner of the map;
- the map can automatically zoom in when you are approaching a turn;
- you can use shake gestures to hear the distance to the next turn or the end of the route;
- routes are coloured by gradient: from red for steep uphill to blue for steep downhill;
- you can configure what information is displayed during a climb or descent.

All this is included for a single one-off payment. No extra in-app purchases or subscriptions are required (although there is a completely optional in-app tip jar which was requested by long-term users).

If you own an Apple Watch and do any form of exercise, then WorkOutDoors is the app for you. Give it a go!

If you like data and tracking all your metrics this app is for you. Infinitely customizable and just so well thought out. Support is also super responsive and helpful.

I primarily wanted to be able to create a screen with huge print for my, now, aging eyes. When I bought this Ultra 3, I had assumed that with all of Apple’s concern for accessibility, this would be built in…NOPE! Lots of screen real estate but Apple insists on shoving thesmall print in the corner of that screen. When exercising, I want to be able to glance at the screen and see the detail I need (mostly heart rate)…and see it clearly. WorkOutDoors (odd name) works beautifully for my vision purpose but also amazing in every use case I can imagine.

I have been using WOD for many years now. Paid the one time purchase price years ago. Love that it hasn’t gone the way of most others that charge a subscription fee. I make a donation through the app every now and then. Would be nice if there was a more direct way to donate. Keep up the good work! Thanks!

I’m hooked on this app, amazing design and features, very robust app in comparison to the Apple app. Note: I have used Suunto and Garmin Fénix. I don’t miss them at all.

I’ve started training for a trail run. I am trying to follow a plan with distance targets to hit. This app allows me to follow a route to hit my distance goal while running without taking out my phone. I am so impressed with the vast flexibility and configuration options to get the app working just how I need it. It’s very helpful having maps available on the watch, metrics for “this climb”, and metrics for the overall route.

I also appreciate the integration with Apple Health and Fitness as well as with Strava.

I highly recommend this app for tracking, navigating, and training.

100x better than the default apple fitness app and I’ve used it for years. Best 10 bucks or whatever I’ve ever spent

Using it on my Series 7 watch where it works better that Strava and Workouts for me, with several custom screens based on activities (I don’t really care about pace, just effort and hard stats and this lets me configure those screens).

Great value for money, with an optional tip jar if you keep using it.

Apple just sent me an email with my subscription charges. WorkOutDoors charged me $8.99 and I did NOT sign up for a subscription nor did I choose any of the “Tip Jar” options.

I haven’t even used the app.

Does everything I need it to and a lot more. Great app!
Chadillac • May 11, 2026
I upload tracks from Trailforks into this for navigation on trails. I’ve never been on, it’s amazing!

A few years ago I switched from a Garmin to the Apple Watch Ultra because I wanted better connectivity without carrying a phone. The native Apple training apps were woefully inadequate for complex workouts. For a while I used an app called ISmoothRun, which was great until an update made it crash frequently. Fortunately I found WorkOutDoors! This app has so much flexibility and customization that I was able to do almost everything that my dedicated Garmin watch could. There’s so much customization available, yet it’s fairly easy to use! I used the app happily and successfully for years.

Note 1) The only problem I could not resolve was the ability to track cumulative time ahead/behind target. There is a field for this, but it didn’t work accurately for me. I spent only a few hours on this, so I can’t be sure that it can’t work, but I am unwilling to invest more time on a feature that should “just work”.

Note 2) now that Garmin has better communication capabilities on its watches, I am switching back to Garmin. This decision is driven by limitations on the Apple Watch. I remain very happy overall with this WorkOutDoors app.

Conclusion: if you are using an Apple Watch for serious running training, this app is a must have!

Customize this app to your heart’s content. Can show tons of info and maps, with lots and lots of options. Wish it could allow you to create routes, instead of having to import them from another mapping tool. And maybe its user error but it doesn’t send data to the native Workouts app (for completing activity rings, etc)

Just showed my girlfriend this app and we were both really impressed with the features that this app brings to our watch for our bike rides and runs!
