Product Positioning & Context
AI Executive Synthesis
Standard browser UI elements and user expectations for search accessibility. The product aims for intuitive and efficient navigation.
The request for a "top search bar," despite its brevity, indicates a fundamental expectation for browser UI. Most modern browsers feature a prominent, persistent search/address bar at the top. Its absence or non-standard implementation in `Search` would represent a significant deviation from established user patterns, potentially hindering discoverability and ease of use for basic web navigation. For a B2B SaaS browser, adhering to conventional UI paradigms for core functionalities like search is crucial for minimizing user learning curves and maximizing productivity. This is a foundational UI element, not a niche feature, and its implementation is essential for competitive user experience.

> Been digging a little bit more into this, I was able to get the Icloud passwords extension working but in a "hacky" way during my testing which involve sending some probe commands to the worker process of icloud's extension, then and only then did it stop the loop and allow me to get the passwords loaded. Hope to publish more soon.

Restarting the app resolves the issue, but the bug can randomly reoccur. What I can confirm so far:
- Opening the extension popup sometimes triggers it, and opening a site also sometimes triggers it, though not consistently.
- Once triggered, I have to press Cmd+F twice to focus the find bar or click into it, and this behavior persists until I restart the app

It looks like Apple has an official process for adding third-party browsers to the iCloud Passwords allowlist:
https://github.com/apple/password-manager-resources
Their README says browser developers can open an issue or PR to request support. Could this be a possible path for Search?

Couldn't reproduce this - ⌘F focuses the find field correctly for me both in the sidebar and top-tab layouts. Could you share which layout you're using (Settings › Customization) and whether it happens on every page or only some? A screen recording would help too.
This appears to only be occurring when the sidebar is hidden / in the open on hover state.
Good catch, but they don't fully overlap: #56's site card only shows connection security when the optional address bar above the page is on (sidebar mode, off by default), and stops at valid/invalid. This issue's fix (#93) puts Site Information… on every tab's right-click menu regardless of that setting, and adds issued to, issued by, and the expiry date, not just a valid/invalid check. Worth keeping both: #56 for the quick glance when that bar is on, this one for everyone else.
+1 — Native iCloud Passwords would make Search feel like a real Safari replacement for me. A few findings in case they help:
**Search can already launch Apple’s helper.** `PasswordManagerBrowserExtensionHelper` has parent launch constraints — when launched from Terminal or a script, the kernel SIGKILLs it (exit 137). Launched by Search 1.0.1 through the iCloud Passwords extension’s `connectNative`, it starts normally and shows the verification code. So Search is an accepted parent, which opens the door to talking to the helper directly from Swift, without an extension: pair once in Settings with the 6-digit code, then show iCloud Keychain accounts in Search’s own sign-in list the way Safari does. That’s the integration I’d love to see.
**Why the extension loops on the PIN** (hypothesis, not confirmed). It seems similar to the issue above: the code is accepted, then it immediately asks again. I saw the helper get relaunched by Search twice within a minute during pairing attempts. In `...

I believe #56 showed this too
tried this with iCloud Passwords chrome extension, there was [another issue](https://github.com/driceroland/Search/issues/2) which got resolved, but the auth doesn't work, after I add the pin, it immediately asks me to enter the pin again
I'm also having this issue with the extensions menu in the bottom left of the tab bar (with vertical tabs) as well. When I go to pin/click on an extension, the popover closes.
In working
+1 to this - I use Zen Browser as my daily driver too, and having bookmarks live in the sidebar above the tabs (instead of tucked away in a popover) is one of the things I miss most when I switch over to Search. Would love to see this land here as well.
I could take a shot at implementing it myself, but it looks like a fairly involved change, so I'm not sure I'll find the right window for it soon. Once the core features settle down, this feels like something worth putting time into.

I opened #56 for this: an optional address bar above the page when the tabs are in the sidebar, like Arc's developer mode (Settings › Tabs, off by default). Clicking the site shows the connection and certificate, copy address, print and zoom; clicking the title opens the address field. Feedback welcome.
I like cmd+l, but I wouldn't want it to become a new tab immediately. Many a times I open a new tab but wouldn't want it to overwrite/delete my current tab, and the current cmd+t implementation forces me to leave my current tab even though I don't always want to do that.
But yes, an opinion! a config option or something like that would be very cool, if possible :)
