Scenario-based conversation is something the AI companion space figured out early, and it's interesting to see it applied to language learning. The best companion apps use roleplay scenarios to keep conversations fresh, and the same principle applies here, except the goal is fluency instead of entertainment. One thing that matters a lot in conversational AI is how the app handles user mistakes. In companion apps, the AI almost always goes along with whatever you say. For language learning, you need the opposite: the AI needs to correct you without killing the flow of conversation. That's a tricky balance. How does Nora handle the correction experience? Is it inline ("did you mean...") or does it wait until the end of a scenario to summarize mistakes?

I dig it! Using more of my beginner Italian in one single day on ChatPal than I ever did on Duo.. hitting a bug though… If I switch out of the app to do anything, even just change the brightness on my phone screen, when I go back to the open app, it thinks I have finished my dialogue.

I think the scenario builder is a game changer here, cause when I see dialogue examples from other language learning services, I often think, "That's a weird thing to talk about" lol.I think this would be even better with a difficulty level, with more slang words the harder it is. Casual convos are the bane of language learners, so you'll have a massive advantage if you can tackle that.

Sounds amazing, but I'm always wary of apps that don't share their pricing up front. How much is the subscription?

👋 Hey folks, thanks for checking out ChatPal 🫶

I’ve been a language teacher and a language learner many times over. Every time I’ve learned a new language, the biggest barrier to using that language in the real world has been practice actually speaking.

ChatPal exists to help language learners practice speaking and accelerate to fluency!

There’s two modes:
- Practice real scenarios like ordering coffee or meeting someone for the first time
- Chat and catch-up with an AI ChatPal, Nora

...and plenty of features to guide and reinforce your learning:
- Instant feedback after every conversation (grammar, word choice, etc)
- Scenario goals to give clear structure
- Hints for achieving scenario goals
- Words in progress tracking tracking to expand vocab
- Fluid mode for seamless conversation
- And much more

I personally use ChatPal every day to practice my Hindi and Spanish, my wife uses it to practice her Italian, and it’s already loved by many language learners.

I’d love to know what you think of ChatPal, I’m excited to get you speaking, and I’ll keep making ChatPal better every day 🫡
