"(Un)Interesting Data: Underwater Zero-Visibility"

Research Abstract & Technology Focus

"While underwater images recorded in zero-visibility conditions may seem uninteresting from the perspective of mission deliverables and mission execution, their detection is of high importance and not as trivial as it may sound at first glance. Zero-visibility data is a nuisance during data curation. And it can be a risk factor for autonomous intelligent functions on board of an unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV), especially of an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV), where according methods expect valid input. There are many underwater image datasets, but they are curated before publication. They may contain some poor visibility data, but no examples of zero-visibility conditions. This dataset therefore includes recordings in zero-visibility conditions. The dataset consists of 32,629 images of which 6,719 are recorded under zero-visibility conditions. The situations with zero-visibility are not staged or artificially generated. They occurred due to the usual challenges of UUV operations, e.g., crossing areas with algae bloom or when facing a sediment plume generated by the thrusters of the UUV. The other 25,910 images show scene content that varies from rather uniform to complex and with a visibility ranging from good to poor. Visible content includes sediment with boulders, rubble, litter, vegetation, as well as concrete and steel structures.  A publication presenting the dataset as well as an evaluation of nine different approaches to detect zero-visibility is currently under review. If you plan to use this dataset, please revisit this page to check for updates and\/or contact the dataset provider (Andreas Birk, abirk@constructor.university) about how to cite it. "
