Research Abstract & Technology Focus

While scholarship on William Eastlake’s The Bamboo Bed (1969) primarily focuses on its anti-war dark satire, its pervasive erotic discourse remains largely unexplored at the linguistic level. Drawing upon Embodied Cognition, this study investigates how sexual experience is linguistically constructed, shifting the paradigm from sexuality as a thematic motif to a sensory, cognitively mediated phenomenon. Utilizing a multimodal coding scheme across four dimensions, this study analyzed a cleaned corpus of 30 target expressions (N=30) with high inter-coder reliability (Cohen’s κ=0.82). Quantitative findings reveal a distinct hierarchy dominated by Interoceptive & Visceral Sensation (86.7%) and Spatial Orientation (80.0%), followed by Kinesthetic Movement (50.0%) and Exteroceptive Sensation (43.3%). Crucially, 83.3% of expressions exhibit multimodal integration. Qualitative close reading demonstrates that Eastlake’s language systematically activates a cross-modal network in which surface tactile contrasts, kinetic trajectories, and image schemas (CONTAINER, VERTICALITY, PROXIMITY) converge to regulate visceral pulses and establish biological safety amid combat. The study concludes that intimacy in The Bamboo Bed functions as an embodied cognitive refuge - a vital physiological mechanism through which characters process, resist, and temporarily heal from war trauma and dehumanization.
