Research Abstract & Technology Focus

Abstract The rapid emergence of smart technologies is transforming traditional warehouses into intelligent, interconnected and sustainable logistics systems. This article examines the potential impact of smart technologies on the Tamil Nadu Warehousing Corporation (TNWC), focusing on operational efficiency, bottleneck reduction, resource optimisation and carbon-footprint reduction within the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) framework. Technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence AI), Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), robotics, automation, predictive maintenance, GPS-based fleet management, smart energy systems and data analytics can improve inventory accuracy, space utilisation, commodity monitoring, transportation efficiency and managerial decision-making. They can also address bottlenecks associated with manual documentation, inventory discrepancies, vehicle congestion, excessive material handling, equipment breakdowns, energy inefficiency and commodity losses. The article proposes an integrated Smart and Green Warehouse model that combines digital transformation with renewable energy, energy-efficient infrastructure, sustainable transportation, waste reduction, circular-economy practices and climate-resilient warehouse design. The approach is aligned with SDG 7, SDG 8, SDG 9, SDG 11, SDG 12, SDG 13 and SDG 17. A phased implementation strategy involving digitalisation, pilot projects, workforce reskilling, carbon accounting, renewable-energy adoption and continuous performance monitoring is recommended. The article concludes that smart technologies can enable TNWC to improve productivity, transparency, resilience and environmental sustainability while contributing to Tamil Nadu's transition towards a low-carbon logistics ecosystem.
