YellowKey Bitlocker Bypass Vulnerability

Technical Positioning
Scope and applicability of the Bitlocker bypass across different Key Protector configurations.
SaaS Insight & Market Implications
This issue highlights a critical limitation or unclear scope for the YellowKey Bitlocker bypass. A user attempting to apply the bypass against a 'TPM And PIN' BitLocker configuration on Windows 11 failed, indicating the tool may be restricted to 'TPM-Only' setups. This directly impacts the perceived utility and market reach of the vulnerability exploit. Developers require precise documentation on supported BitLocker Key Protector types to avoid misapplication and manage expectations. Ambiguity here reduces confidence and necessitates further clarification on the exploit's operational boundaries.

Q: Does it work with anything other than TPM-only key protector?

First of all, props for finding this, really does look quite sick :)

I just tried it against a Windows 11 laptop running BitLocker with the Key Protector "TPM And PIN".
Still threw me to the BitLocker screen to insert my PIN.
Can you say something about whether this solely works with "TPM-Only", or if it should work with other Key Protector types as well?

Thanks!

It should because that WinRE isn't extracted by default on some OEM vendor machine.

Yeah this checks out - reagentc /enable is what actually copies winre.wim`onto the unencrypted recovery partition and registers the BCD recoverysequence entry, so until that runs there's nothing on...

> If anyone needs a temporary mitigation while waiting for a patch, reagentc /disable does the job - you lose recovery functionality but the attack surface goes with it. I assume it is alternativel...
