hatchzip's in-place extraction and space management capabilities on FAT32 filesystems.

Technical Positioning
hatchzip aims to efficiently extract large archives with minimal temporary space requirements, even on constrained filesystems like FAT32.
SaaS Insight & Market Implications
This report validates `hatchzip`'s core value proposition: in-place extraction on FAT32, a challenging filesystem for space management. Confirmation that all tested formats (ZIP, tar.gz, 7z, split ZIP) extract correctly and remove archives post-completion is critical. The explicit note about FAT32's 'truncation only' behavior, rather than 'punching holes,' clarifies the space-saving mechanism, managing user expectations. Throughput analysis correctly identifies the USB stick as the bottleneck, not the extractor, reinforcing `hatchzip`'s efficiency. This detailed validation strengthens the product's market position for users operating in resource-constrained environments or with legacy filesystems. It demonstrates robust engineering for a niche but important use case, reducing developer pain points related to filesystem-specific optimizations and ensuring reliable operation.

FAT32 USB on macOS 27: extraction, resume and throughput results

# FAT32 USB drive: extraction, space plan and resume results

## Environment

- macOS 27.0.1, Apple Silicon (arm64)
- 15.4 GB USB stick, MS-DOS FAT32, mounted through the new `fskit` driver, 6.4 GiB free
- hatchzip 0.1.2 from source, release build (correctness), debug build (crash knobs)
- Dataset: 58 files, 405.8 MB uncompressed, 61 entries. 200.7 MB ZIP (Deflate), 200.7 MB `.tar.gz` (gzip -6), 200.0 MB 7z (`-ms=8m`, multi-block), and the ZIP byte-split into two volumes (120 MB + 75 MB)
- Every file compared by SHA-256 against the source tree. Archive and side files checked for removal after each run.

## Results

| Archive | `check` says | Extract | SHA-256 | Archive removed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ZIP, 61 entries | needs 245.3 MB (truncates per unit, no punch) | 77.3 s | 58/58 match | yes |
| `.tar.gz`, 61 entries | prints "this drive cannot release space inside a file..." and needs 406.0 MB | 77.6 s | 58/58 match | yes |
| 7z, `-ms=8m` | needs 245.9 MB (frees block by block) | 87.4 s | 58/58 match | yes |
| Split ZIP `.001/.002` | needs 245.3 MB | 76.8 s | 58/58 match | yes, both volumes deleted, no side files left |

Throughput: about 5.3 MB/s of output on the stick (USB 2.0-class, `ioreg` reports a USB2 hub). The same ZIP on the internal APFS SSD took 0.65 s, about 119 times faster, so the stick is the bottleneck, not the extractor.
