Research Abstract & Technology Focus

These Simons Collaboration on Ocean Processes and Ecology (SCOPE) data products were produced by the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa with support from the Simons Foundation. The 2018 SCOPE-Falkor Cruise north of Oahu, Hawaii, built on the observations of the SCOPE expeditions conducted during 2015-2017 by looking at diel variability associated with the deep chlorophyll maximum and quantifying the impact of mesoscale eddies on the ecology and functioning of the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre. A unique aspect to the expedition was the use of Long-Range Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (LRAUVs) which were integrated into the science operations in conjunction with other oceanographic equipment. APEX Float 8146 was deployed on the cruise with the following instrument suite: SBE41 (CTD), BBFL2 fluorometer and backscatter sensor (chl, bbp), C-ROVER transmissometer (beam attenuation), CRV2K (downwelling irradiance), and an Aandera 4330 (oxygen sensor). Applied corrections/calibrations: chlorophyll counts converted to mg/m3 using factory calibrations, volume scattering converted to particle Backstein coefficient (bbp) using betasw of Zhang et al (2009) and Xi from Boss and Pegau (2001), irradiance data were qa/qc following protocols of Organelli et al (2016), JTECH, and oxygen optode data were corrected using salinity and pressure compensation corrections from CTD data according to Aandera manual. Timestamp is in UTC.
