Research Abstract & Technology Focus

This dataset contains operational records of MASS Pump, a modular in situ large-volume filtration system developed for environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling in the deep ocean. The dataset comprises 84 operational records collected during 13 research cruises from 2020 to 2025 at 22 locations, covering depths from 289 to 9,211 m. MASS Pump was operated using multiple deployment platforms, including CTD rosettes, landers, baited camera systems, an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV), a remotely operated vehicle (ROV), a human-occupied vehicle (HOV), and an ROV-mounted deep-sea endoscope. The dataset includes information on deployment platform and location, filtration depth, pump unit, power source, number of filters, filtration mode and duration, filtered water volume, volume-determination method, mean filtration rate, operational outcome, technical issues, and the results of MiFish PCR amplification and sequence-read acquisition. Filtered volume was determined either from flowmeter measurements or from cumulative pump operating time using calibration-derived filtration rates. The dataset is provided in both Microsoft Excel (.xlsx) and comma-separated values (.csv) formats, together with a README file describing the variables and data interpretation. These data support the manuscript: Fujiwara, Y., Masuda, K., Kawato, M., Tsuchida, S., and Yoshida, T. “MASS Pump: A full-ocean-depth-capable large-volume in situ filtration system for environmental DNA sampling.”
