LASRecomp game code static recompilation process, specifically the `lasgen.exe` component.

Technical Positioning
LASRecomp aims to provide a reliable static recompilation tool for Link's Awakening (Switch) to native platforms.
SaaS Insight & Market Implications
This issue details a critical failure in `LASRecomp`'s core `lasgen.exe` component during game code generation on Windows. The silent exit with a `0xC0000409` exception, traced to `VCRUNTIME140.dll`, indicates a fundamental runtime dependency or memory corruption issue, not a simple resource constraint despite the initial error message. The developer pain point is the fragility of the build process, where a core executable fails without informative logging, hindering troubleshooting. The user's extensive attempts to resolve (disk space, folder location, antivirus, redistributable versions, DLL renaming) highlight the difficulty in diagnosing such low-level runtime errors. Market implications are severe: a non-functional build process renders the entire static recompilation project unusable for end-users, severely limiting adoption and demonstrating a lack of robustness in the Windows release package.
Proprietary Technical Taxonomy
Static recompilation game code didn't build generator (sdk) failed lasgen.exe exits silently $LASTEXITCODE = -1073740791 (0xC0000409) no output folder created main.npdm

Raw Developer Origin & Technical Request

Source Icon GitHub Issue Oct 23, 2026
Repo: peiikai/LASRecomp
Game files setup fails: "The game code didn't build, make sure there is 2GB free"

Windows build, extracted to C:\LASRECOMP (release package, no Python installed).
Launcher log: [gamebuild] generator (sdk) failed: (no message), failed in 2s

Running the generator by hand:
.\lasgen\lasgen.exe sdk extracted\exefs\sdk 0x0 test_outdir
-> exits silently, $LASTEXITCODE = -1073740791 (0xC0000409), no output folder created
Same result for "main", and with --simd c. --help works.

extracted\exefs contains main (14984660), main.npdm, rtld, sdk (5374578),
subsdk0, subsdk1, and romfs.bin is 6232255152 bytes.

Event Viewer (Application Error):
Faulting application: lasgen.exe
Faulting module: C:\LASRECOMP\lasgen\_internal\VCRUNTIME140.dll, 14.42.34438.0
Exception 0xc0000409, fault offset 0xdd70

Already tried: plenty of free disk space (300 GB), moved folder to C:\LASRECOMP,
no antivirus, system VC++ redistributable is already newer (14.44.35211+),
renaming the bundled VCRUNTIME140.dll / VCRUNTIME140_1.dll.

CPU: Ryzen 7 5700x

Developer Debate & Comments

Thanks for the detailed report, that makes it much easier to look at. Two things: 1. **romfs needs to be a folder.** The game files folder should contain `exefs` and `romfs` as folders, with the extracted files inside each. A single `romfs.bin` file won't work. Your `exefs` files look exactly right for version 1.0.0. 2. **The generator crash.** That one shouldn't happen even with the wrong romfs, so we'd like to understand it. Could you: - delete the LAS Recomp folder and unzip a fresh copy of the latest release (don't rename or replace any of its DLLs), - check that Windows didn't block it: right-click the zip, Properties, and tick "Unblock" if it's there, before unzipping; and if Smart App Control is on (Windows Security > App & browser control), let us know, - then run the setup again with the romfs folder, and attach `lasrecomp.log` from the LAS Recomp data folder, plus the version shown on the start screen?

I've tried the steps above, downloaded a fresh copy, still receiving the same error. Smart App Control is off. I have done the romfs and exefs right, putting them both as seperate folders, containing their files. But I have still been receiving the same error. Version is Beta 4 [lasrecomp.log](https://github.com/user-attachments/files/33882534/lasrecomp.log)

This is an automatic summary of the LAS Recomp log files attached to this issue. It only reads the logs, so a person will still look at the details. For a new report, please attach `lasrecomp.log` from LAS Recomp's data folder (it always holds the latest run; `lasrecomp-backup-*.log` there are the earlier runs). #### Newest log: [lasrecomp.log](https://github.com/user-attachments/files/33882534/lasrecomp.log) in [comment from 2026-10-23](https://github.com/peiikai/LASRecomp/issues/337#issuecomment-6370050451) - **Build:** `beta_4 (windows)` - **System:** Windows - **GPU:** `NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti`, Vulkan 1.4.357 - **Backend:** Vulkan - **Graphics settings:** not in the log - **How the run ended:** the log stops without an exit line (closed from outside, frozen, or still running when copied) - **Frame rate:** no frame rate lines

Thanks for trying all of that and for the log. Your game files are fine now; the log shows the game-code generator (lasgen) itself crashing on the very first file, which isn't something your setup should cause. Two things that would help: 1. Could you try the Beta 5 test build, **[test-perf-8](https://github.com/peiikai/LASRecomp/releases/tag/test-perf-8)** (it has a newer generator), with the same game files folder? If it works there, the fix is already on its way in Beta 5. 2. If it still fails, please open a Command Prompt in the LAS Recomp folder and run these two lines, then paste what it prints: ``` set PYTHONFAULTHANDLER=1 lasgen\lasgen.exe sdk extracted\exefs\sdk 0x0 test_outdir ``` (adjust `extracted\exefs\sdk` to where your exefs folder is). That makes the generator report where it crashes.
peiikai • Oct 23, 2026
Small update: test-perf-8 has been replaced by **[test-perf-9](https://github.com/peiikai/LASRecomp/releases/tag/test-perf-9)**, which fixes a rare flicker; please use that one instead (same setup steps).

Seems a lot of Intel GPU's specifically are puking. I don't have any Intel GPU's to test on but I'll review the log and see what can be done if anything.

Hey again, could you please try this from the command prompt in the LAS Recomp folder and let me know? If it still crashes (or even if it doesn't) please shoot another log. `set "LARECOMP_VK_NO_GME...

I will upload the logs tonight. But here's an interesting screenshot concerning match display resolution:
peiikai • Oct 17, 2026
Thanks! That number is expected: "Match display" renders at the window's real pixel size, and Retina screens have twice the pixels of the "looks like" size (1440 × 900 → up to 2880 × 1800). Windowe...

A beefy system like that absolutely shouldn't be struggling like that. What are your video settings? Are you trying to run at 4x or something?
