Eglantine emulator's texture cache management and VRAM utilization

Technical Positioning
Achieving stable and accurate emulation, particularly regarding graphics rendering and memory management, on specific GPU architectures.
SaaS Insight & Market Implications
This issue exposes critical VRAM management and texture caching deficiencies within the Eglantine emulator, specifically on AMD RDNA 2 architecture. The emulator's texture cache exceeds its allocated budget, leading to a fallback to 'unbacked sparse images,' causing visual artifacts (flickering, partial textures) and eventual application crashes. This indicates a fundamental architectural challenge in balancing performance with memory constraints, particularly for experimental emulators targeting next-gen hardware. The pain point is the instability and resource mismanagement, directly impacting user experience and the emulator's viability. Market implications include the difficulty of achieving robust hardware compatibility and efficient resource allocation in highly experimental software, highlighting the engineering complexity required for high-fidelity emulation.

Mario Kart World: vegetation flickers, textures partially loaded, then closes (texture cache over budget -> unbacked sparse images, RX 6650 XT 8 GB)

## Description
In Mario Kart World (title 0400C3F00006E000) all vegetation flickers, some other textures look partially loaded, and the emulator closes without any error after a while (the window just disappears). Changing the ASTC recompression or the VRAM usage mode does not fix it.

## Environment
- Build: hotfix/amd-sparse-lazy-crash (3af11ac401), Windows x86_64
- OS: Windows 11 24H2
- CPU: i5-10400F, 16 GB RAM
- GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6650 XT (8 GB), driver 2.0.353, Vulkan 1.4.315. The emulator reports "Available VRAM: 6.31 GiB".
- Other settings: Vulkan, gpu_accuracy High, resolution 1X, accelerate_astc Gpu, dyna_state EDS2
- No keys/firmware installed (aes_util EVP_CipherInit_ex2 asserts at boot).

## What the log shows
The texture cache goes over its VRAM budget and the allocator falls back to unbacked sparse images:

```
TickFrame: Texture cache: device memory 5892 MiB (expected 5111 MiB, critical 5963 MiB), 1976 images 9003 MiB
CreateImage: Image 1024x1024x1 (11 levels, 1 layers, format 51) does not fit; using an unbacked sparse image
CreateImage: Image 342x1024x1 (11 levels, 1 layers, format 51) does not fit; using an unbacked sparse image
```

- Early on the cache is far under budget (3046 MiB, 440 images, ~2.8 GB). Later it reaches ~9 GB of images against a "critical" limit of ~5.9-6.0 GiB.
- In the longest run, 600 "does not fit" warnings, almost all format 51; the first one appeared ~77 s after the game started loading.
- The flicker looks consistent with those un...

Found the exact trigger, and a correction to the description. **Trigger:** it closes when I skip the pre-race intro sequence (the cutscene shown before the race) and the game tries to go to the next scene/gameplay. It happens right at that moment, every time. **Log of that run** (ASTC Uncompressed, VRAM mode Aggressive; game booted at ~68 s, closed at ~207 s): ``` nx2:vdecsvc frame 600 (2560x1440, pts 9983000 us) in image 5 nx2:vdecsvc TIPC 8 flush / TIPC 207 stop

One more setting I forgot to mention: I changed the System setting for the emulated memory size from the default (4 GB) to 8 GB (the log shows `Core.memory_layout_mode: Memory_8Gb` for the run that closed at the intro-to-race transition). It still closes at the same point, so it does not help. As far as I understand this is the guest memory layout and not the GPU memory budget, so it is not expected to change the VRAM numbers above.

Two of the three symptoms here I have reproduced on an 8 GB AMD card (RX 5700, RDNA 1, Windows 11, Vulkan), and there are patches open for both. Details so you can match them against your runs. **1. Vegetation flicker** This one is not the texture cache. The flicker comes from native shader programs being rejected in the vertex stage, which drops the draw. The opcodes were `0x923` (ISBERD) and `0x927` (ISBEWR), which the Ampere to Maxwell lowering did not implement, so every program using them was thrown away. On my runs: ``` before: 10 "Native graphics shader rejected" per session, heavy flicker of vegetation and roadside objects after : 2 per session, and the flicker of objects stops ``` The 2 that remain are tessellation and geometry stages, which have no native lowering at all yet, and those affect lighting and shadow on paved tracks rather than vegetation. **2. "does not fit; using an unbacked sparse image"** Your log shows 600 of those, almost all format 51, with the ...

for me this is happening only when using gpu mode: accurate switching to fast fixes everything, not sure if all environments are rendered correctly because some of them looks a bit empty but no glitches win11 5950x rtx 5090

Update after the tree and mesh work landed in `nx2` (`d9e4ac8360` and the DRAWLOG / `dma_pusher` commits), plus one texture cache change I am proposing in . **Vegetation: gone.** With ISBERD implemented the way it is now, the per-frame shader rejections that made the trees morph and flicker are no longer happening on my runs, and the scene holds still. Same title, same 8 GB AMD card. That matches what you described as the main visual problem. **The hard stop: pushed back, not fixed.** The crash came from the same place we both saw, the burst of format 51 mip chains at the intro to race transition. With the texture cache capped at 60% / 75% of the driver budget (750 MiB less on this card) the same session goes from dying around 256 s to still running at 655 s: ``` before: cache 1346 -> 3904 -> 4562 -> 5035 -> 6163 MiB, dead at ~256 s after : cache 4580 MiB, 60 FPS (16.71 ms), 0 frames over 100 ms, alive at 448 s and 655 s at 655 s: 5261 MiB, frame 57 ms, 41 frames over 10...

No, I'm saying that the main development itself shouldn't be on GitHub lmao

If the repo is synced as a mirror, then development can continue on the mirror without problems at any time. Besides, Yuzu got DMCA'd because they blatantly admited to piracy by pushin TotK commits...

Same GPU here, RX 5700 (RDNA 1) on Windows 11 / MSVC 19.44, build-96 lineage (base `feff94e` + local fixes) — and the race intro does **not** crash, so it is probably not the RDNA 1 driver by itsel...

Take your game off of accurate mode, it's a side effect of using that
AverageDood • Oct 31, 2026
Yep, that did it. Now there's like some kind of white tint over the gameplay (not during the cutsecenes and dialogues tho), but idk if I should report that as a bug or if is an expected side effect...
