Hiraeth – An AWS Emulator

Technical Positioning
A lightweight, open-source alternative to Localstack for emulating AWS services locally, starting with SQS, designed to address concerns around Localstack's pricing/licensing changes, offering instant startup, small Docker image size, and AWS Sigv4 authentication.
SaaS Insight & Market Implications
Hiraeth directly addresses a significant developer pain point and market opportunity created by changes in Localstack's pricing and licensing. By offering a lightweight, open-source AWS emulator, it provides a cost-effective and flexible alternative for local development and testing of cloud-native applications. The focus on minimal resource consumption (4MB Docker image, instant startup) and core service emulation (SQS first) positions it as a practical utility for developers seeking to reduce cloud development costs and improve local iteration speed. This product capitalizes on market dissatisfaction with existing solutions, offering a compelling value proposition for organizations building on AWS who require robust local testing environments.

With the recent changes around Localstack pricing/licensing I've been hunting for alternatives. I decided that it might be a fun experiment to try rolling my own. SQS is a service I use heavily so I chose that as the first service to implement. I have more services planned and in development.A few things I think are cool:4MB Docker Image SizeInstant StartupAWS Sigv4 AuthenticationA little admin UI that can be helpful for development/troubleshootingMost of the SQS API implemented, the rest will soon follow :)

What kind of things would you use this to simulate ?Is this to make sure services are wired up with permission and communicate properly before you deploy or what is the use case ?Also, why not have a dev environment where you can test things on the real thing (ideally with smaller size instances to save $)
